"Therapy Show is a tonic for Hospice" Report from the previous event: The Holistic Health and Therapy Show held last weekend at the Leicester Stage Hotel, Wigston was a huge success raising over £5,000 towards patient care at LOROS, the Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice. Show organiser Ali Ladak, a volunteer holistic therapist and Counsellor for the hospice based at Groby Road, Leicester was delighted with the result following several month's of planning. Mr Ladak, who also performed numerous therapies at the Show, said "I understand that there has never been an event quite like this where the overwhelming emphasis was on therapies. We had such a wide range including aromatherapy, aqua-detox, crystal healing, eastern head massage, reflexology and many more. Everyone was so supportive and as a result over £5,000 will have been raised for LOROS." LOROS Senior Fundraiser Adrian Walker said "I am so pleased this event was successful as Ali had put in so much work behind the scenes in the lead up to the Show. The funds raised are fantastic and will go a long way to helping the many terminally-ill patients in the Hospice, at the Manor Croft Palliative Day Therapy Unit and in their own homes." Mr Walker also added "Hopefully this event will encourage many people to revise their New Year's resolutions and start on a healthier way of living. I did not know there are so many different therapies available. I was especially impressed with the results of the hopi ear candles and the hot stone massage." The raffle was drawn by Mr Derek Horsfall, the Mayor of Oadby and Wigston with Jackie Williams winning the first prize of a year's membership for two at Living Well Health Club. Second prize of a JVC camcorder went to Mr N Thanki. All other prize winners have been contacted. LOROS would like to thank Ali Ladak and everyone who attended the Show for their tremendous support.
LOROS, the Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice, provides care for terminally-ill patients throughout both counties. LOROS is a local charity, run by local people for the benefit of local patients. Most patients referred to LOROS are in the advanced stages of cancer but LOROS also takes patients with motor neurone disease and a few patients with other terminal illnesses. The centre of the organisation is at the hospice, off Groby Road, Leicester, which has thirty-one in-patient beds where specialist pain relief and symptom control are provided. The aim of the care is to enhance the quality of life both for the patient and the family. Patients, some as young as eighteen years, are visited at and supported in their own homes by our team of Clinical Nurse Specialists and our team of family support visitors. A range of services and therapies is available at the Palliative Day Therapy Unit at Manor Croft in the Stoneygate area of Leicester. LOROS also has clinics for the treatment of lymphoedema at the hospice. LOROS is currently celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the opening of the hospice's doors and to date approximately 18,000 patients have received care. All of the services are offered free to patients and their families. Patients are accepted on the basis of medical need irrespective of their individual circumstances. The care and services provided by LOROS currently cost £5.7 million a year (this equates to £10.86 per minute of every day). LOROS receives 42% of its income from the National Health Service but the remaining minimum of £3.3 million is required from voluntary fundraising and donations.
